Supporting clear, confident vision from an early age

Your child’s vision plays a vital role in their learning and confidence. At S Walton Eyecare, our gentle, age-appropriate examinations help spot problems early, long before they affect school or day-to-day life. With nearly 100 years of caring for local families, we aim to make every visit comfortable and reassuring.

Early Checks Make a Big Difference

School vision screening has resumed in South Tyneside and is carried out by school nurses for reception-age children. While this screening is helpful, it is only a basic assessment. Some conditions can still be missed unless examined by an optometrist.

The earlier problems such as long-sightedness, short-sightedness, astigmatism or a lazy eye are detected, the more effective treatment can be. If left uncorrected past a certain age, a child may develop permanently reduced vision in one or both eyes.

If your child missed their school screening, has symptoms, or if there is a family history of squint or lazy eye, it is strongly advisable to book an eye test. Children’s NHS eye examinations are free up to age 16, or under 19 in full-time education.

Common Children’s Eye Conditions

Children may develop vision problems such as long-sightedness, short-sightedness or astigmatism, which can affect reading comfort or how clearly they see the board at school. Some children develop a squint, where the eyes are not aligned, or a lazy eye (amblyopia), which requires early intervention for the best results.

If you notice an eye turning in or out at any point after six weeks of age, you should arrange an eye examination promptly. Early treatment greatly improves long-term visual outcomes.

Contact Lenses for Active, Confident Kids

For many children, contact lenses offer freedom during sports, school and day-to-day activities. We assess whether your child is ready for lenses and teach them how to handle and care for them safely. When introduced at the right age, lenses can be both comfortable and easy to manage. They also form an important part of our myopia management approach for suitable patients.

Some children find reading uncomfortable, lose their place on the page or struggle to focus for long periods. Our visual stress assessments help determine whether coloured overlays or precision tints improve comfort and reading fluency. For many children, these simple, gentle interventions can make a noticeable difference.
